Itching and burning, persistent discomfort? Not having a lot of fun with sex anymore? Maybe you just have vaginal dryness! It's easy to treat and get your confidence back. Here's how to know and what to do about it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medical checkup
  • Herbal remedy
  • Lubricant (K-Y, etc.)
  1. Step 1

First get a medical checkup. You need a doctor to rule out the possibility of an infection, cancer, or other obvious medical emergency.

  2. Step 2

The most common trigger for dryness in the vagina is changes in your hormones. If you are pregnant or nursing, your levels of estrogen can drop. Sometimes, time will take care of the problem.

  3. Step 3

Some women are allergic to condoms and/or lubricants that include certain types of spermicide. Check with your doctor to see if this is you. Try another birth control method.

  4. Step 4

Use a vaginal cream. There are lots of vaginal lubricants and creams on the market. Water-based creams offer instant relief, while solutions that include estrogen cost more but give you longer lasting results.

  5. Step 5

Stop using douches, tampons, and other treatments in the vagina. These often have a drying affect on the delicate lining.

  6. Step 6

Try eating foods rich in natural estrogen sources. These include products made from soybeans such tofu and soy milk; also, wild yam is said to be good for this.

  7. Step 7

Some holistic health professionals recommend black cohosh. This is an herbal supplement that can be used for symptoms of menopause; however, scientific studies have not been done to assess its value for vaginal dryness.

  8. Step 8

Take your time with sex. As you age, normal changes in your vagina mean that it will take longer properly to lubricate. Tell your partner to slow down. Use lubricants as necessary.
