Celebrate National Arbor Day

National Arbor Day was originally founded April 10, 1872. Today the most common date to celebrate is April 22, 2009. Each state has an official Arbor Day at the time of year that is climatologically correct for planting in that area. Recognizing National Arbor Day is an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate trees and forests. Trees and forests provide wildlife habitat, clean water and special places for us to enjoy. Forests, carbon dioxide, and climate change are all related. An increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere increases our air temperature. Forests absorb and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. Keeping our trees and forests viable is crucial in maintaining the health of our environment. Our future depends on the survival of growing forests as only one of the key solutions to control global warming!

Step 1

Planting a tree is the simplest way to celebrate National Arbor Day.
Step 2

Give a tree to someone as a gift for them to plant. Or plant your trees together!
Step 3

Volunteer with a local tree planting organization in your area.
Step 4

Assist in a public area where tree planting or maintenance might make a difference in your community.
Step 5

Read a book to a child identifying the different types of trees and where they are indiginous.
