The first step is to plan your flower bed. Find an area in your yard that will best accommodate your flower bed. It must have good drainage and get at least 6 hours of sun per day. Mark out your bed and work up the ground with a rototiller. With tilled soil approximately 9" deep work in organic matter such as compost to prepare your soil naturally. Now you're ready to create a layout.

Consider and decide what's to go where. Start with the perennials (plants that last year after year). Choose perennials that are hardy and ones that will give a good splash of color. Stake out the areas in your bed where all perennials will go. Keep in mind, perennials come back year after year so choose something you can live with for the long haul.

Next in your layout decide where you'd like to place your bulbous plants such as tulips, gladioli, irises etc. Keep in mind that these bulbous are beautiful but most of the blossoms only last a little while. Bulbs look best when in groups. So stake out your bulbous areas accordingly.

Last in the layout, leave some space for annuals from seed. Because these will be replaced every year you have a little more freedom to let your imagination run wild. Try different clusters or colors. You may even want to add some herbs for a little added fragrance.

With your bed divided and stakes marking placement of plants and groups - you're ready to start planting! Plant perennials first, the bulbs, then annuals.

Finish off your bed by outlining with decorative flats stones, railroad ties, or whatever suits your taste! Now enjoy it's beauty all summer (and don't forget to weed and water as directed).
