Splice Speaker Wires

No sound from your speakers? Don't run out and buy a new sound system, it might be just a simple task of fixing your speaker wires. Splicing your speaker wires is an easy repair to get your sound back and it could save you a bundle. Speaker wire comes in different gauges, with a wide variety of lengths offered. Thicker wire is used for larger sound systems, so make sure you connect the right wires when splicing them together.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off the power source leading to the wires that need to be repaired.
Using wire cutters, cut off a quarter inch of each wire to be spliced. This will give you to a clean wire to strip.

  2. Step 2

Using the utility knife, carefully cut between the two wires. This will give you four separate wires.

  3. Step 3

Use wire strippers to strip off approximately a half inch of coating from the wire. Repeat on the three remaining wires to be spliced.

  4. Step 4

Note that one set of wires will have white lines on them. Take the two wires that have the white lines and twist them together. Twist the remaining two wires together. Sound systems have a (+) positive and a (-) negative input.

  5. Step 5

Put electrical tape around to cover all exposed wires. Do the same for the other wire.

  6. Step 6

Put a strip of electrical tape around both wires to create one solid wire.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have a wire stripper, wire cutters can be used. If you do not have a utility knife, you can use wire cutters. Splice and attach the correct wires.
  • Always make sure the system is turned off when repairing wires. The speakers and system can short out if the system is on.
