How to Calculate a Tax Write-Off
Any expense you incur, whether it is for personal or business use, is less painful if it can be written off on your tax return. But knowing where and how to write off certain kinds of expenses can often be a challenge, and even professional preparers must frequently do research to know how to calculate a tax write-off and where to properly enter a deduction.

1
Determine what kind of deduction you have and what category it falls into. From there, you will need to find out which supporting schedule the deduction is reported on. If your deduction is related to business or investments, then you will use one schedule, while personal deductions are reported elsewhere.
-
2
Report all business-related deductions on Schedule C if you are self-employed. This includes all costs related to your business, such as wages, contract labor, benefits, office equipment and supplies, rent, insurance and miscellaneous costs.

3
Report any depreciation of vehicles and other equipment on Form 4562. Report home office expenses on Form 8829 and rental- and royalty-related deductions on Schedule E. Student loan interest, educator expenses and self-employed health insurance expenses go right onto Part II of the 1040.
-
4
Report all personal expenses on Schedule A if you are eligible to itemize deductions. This includes real estate, sales, state and local taxes; medical expenses; mortgage interest; casualty losses; and charitable donations. Unreimbursed employee expenses are carried onto the Schedule A from Form 2106.
-
5
Read the instruction manuals for the 1040 and any relevant schedules carefully to determine the formula or method of deducting each expense. Each schedule has its own set of instructions that will tell you what expenses for that form can be deducted and how. If you are not using a computer program, you may need a calculator to do this.
