    Things You'll Need

    • Chicken wire or wire mesh
    • Fiberglass mesh tape or roll
    • Styrofoam or scrap wood pieces
    • Screw gun
    • Screws
    • T-2000 latex reinforced cement
    • Concrete stain (optional)
      • 1

Begin your sculpture by building a "skeleton" of scrap wood and/or Styrofoam for support. Scrap wood can be used to create the inner framework of a very large piece, and Styrofoam creates lightweight bulk.

      • 2

Cover the entire skeleton with chicken wire and then wire mesh. Use the chicken wire to create certain details, like facial noses.

      • 3

Cover the piece with one final layer of fiber mesh adhesive tape, more commonly used for drywall joints.

      • 4

Measure the water according to the label on your T-2000 cement. Some concrete stain products are designed to be added at this stage for even color distribution. Others are designed to be applied afterward, like a paint.

Wear sturdy rubber gloves to protect your hands. Too much exposure to cement can ruin your manicure and cause terrible painful cracking on your knuckles. In addition to the drying properties of the cement, the pebbles and rocks can scratch your skin.

Mix your cement in a bucket or trough. An unbelievable amount of water must be mixed into the cement mixture. Use small quantities at first, until you get the feel for the product. When sculpting in detailed areas, small quantities will allow you to more time to work with the product. Press the cement deep into the cracks as you're working. Use hand tools to spread large quantities of cement.

    Tips & Warnings

    • For a smooth finish, dip your gloved hand into a bucket of water and smooth over the surface of the cement when it's nearly dry.

    • Don't make the mistake of thinking it will be easier to work with if you don't add as much water. In reality, using less water can make the cement crumbly instead.
