An electro-magnet has advantages over a permanent magnet in that it may be turned on and off at will. It can be used in a science class to demonstrate the movement of electrons in a wire and to demonstrate magnetic fields. Making a DC electro-magnet is a fairly simple process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iron bar/bolt
  • Wire
  • Battery
  1. Step 1

Take an iron bar. The size will be determined by your purpose for the magnet. For a demonstration magnet, a 6-inch iron bolt will suffice.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the length of wire tightly around the bolt or bar and secure the wire. Connect one end of the coiled wire to the negative terminal of the battery.

  3. Step 3

Touch the other end of the coiled wire to the positive terminal to complete the circuit, thus magnetizing the bolt or bar.

  4. Step 4

Connect a switch before the positive terminal, if you want. Tripping the switch will activate the magnet.

  5. Step 5

Use the magnet to attract other metal items, and then turn the switch to the off position to demagnetize it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use covered wire.
  • Use caution when working with electricity.
