How to Learn to Dance for Prom

Even though parents can usually coach you on how to pin a corsage, they are not often able to help you learn to dance for that classic American rite of passage, prom. Luckily dancing today isn't the intricately choreographed, socially structured challenge it used to be. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Fast Dancing

    • 1

Practice finding the beat. Listen to your favorite music and listen for the beat. Try clapping your hands at different paces to find it. After finding it by clapping, try stepping side to side in time to it.

    • 2

Master the casual. Get comfortable moving side to side with the beat. Let your arms loosely hang down at your sides.

    • 3

Let loose. Turn on your favorite music and just let go. Act out the lyrics, kick your legs up, gyrate your hips, whatever you want. The point is to relax and enjoy yourself with the music.

    • 4

Join your friends. If you have friends who are good dancers, practice with them.

    • 5

Go online. Find online videos (see Resources) that teach you how to fast (also called freestyle) dance.

    • 6

Buy or borrow some dance DVDs like "You Can't Dance Nightclub" or "Party Line Dances." Use these to practice. Even if you don't master the moves, knowing them will help you feel more confident.

    Slow Dancing

    • 7

Sway to the beat. Just alternate leaning your weight on one foot and then the other.

    • 8

Place your arms properly. You will either loop your arms around your partner's neck (girls) or waist (boys) or place once hand on her back (boys) or shoulder (girls) and hold up the other hand.

    • 9

      Turn in a slow circle.

Tips & Warnings

  • The most important thing to do is relax and have fun. Everyone else is nervous too, so try to keep in mind that no one is staring you. Remember that there's strength in numbers. Stay in the middle of the crowd to blend in if you feel self-conscious.
