How to Print Wirelessly From a MacBook thumbnail
You can print wirelessly from your MacBook.

Your MacBook is a powerful portable. You already surf the web, read email, work and write on it, so why leave the couch when it is time to print? Printing wirelessly saves you time, effort and desk space. In just a few minutes, you'll be able to forgo frequent trips to the desk every time you need to print a document or important email.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your MacBook's "System Preferences" and click "Print and Fax."

    • 2

Click the "+" sign to add a new printer. At this point, depending on your setup, you can either add a new printer connected to a different computer (Steps 3 and 4) or a wireless printer (Step 5).

    • 3

Enable printer sharing on the other computer by opening "System Preferences" and clicking on "Sharing" in the third row. Ensure that the "Printer Sharing" check box is enabled.

    • 4

Return to your MacBook and add the printer connected to the other computer. It will be named "[Printer model] @ [Computer Name]." For example, it will be listed as "HP Laserjet 1300 @ Jim's iMac." Now you can send documents wirelessly to that printer, as long as the computer connected to the printer is powered on.

    • 5

Add a Wi-Fi enabled printer by finding it in the "Add Printer" dialog box (Step 2). Ensure that the printer is powered on and properly connected to your home or office wireless network.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also hook a printer up to an Apple wireless router, such as the Time Capsule, Airport Extreme and Airport Express. Follow the instructions for Steps 3 and 4.

  • If you're using the setup in Steps 3 and 4, you won't be able to print if the computer is asleep. You can set the "Energy Saver" preferences to keep the computer awake at all times, though this consumes more energy.
