How to Cast Kettlebells
A kettlebell can be cast to your exact weight specifications, and it can be crafted out of steel. The kettlebell is a weightlifting device that consists of weights and a metal handle; this device originated in Russia and is used for swing exercises, strengthening the upper extremities and improving balance. It is easy to create kettlebells that work just like cast kettlebells for little expense.
A standard kettlebell is made of cast iron with a nearly round weight stemming from the handle. To make a cast-iron kettlebell, a traditional kettlebell is cast as a single piece. This means that the weight of the kettlebell is not modifiable. If, however, you use other materials, you can craft a modifiable kettlebell out of steel.
Things You'll Need
- 1 triceps bar
- 2 standard metal clamps
- 2 metal hose clamps
- 4 barbell weights, 5 lb. each
- Nut and bolt (optional)
- 4 2 1/5 lb. weights (optional)
- 4 10 lb. weights (optional)
- Hacksaw
- Metal file
Instructions

1
Take up the triceps bar and cut it right down the middle between the two horizontal bars with the saw. The tricep bar is crafted out of steel; it has a square with two bars positioned vertically within the square and two horizontal handles, one positioned on the each of the outermost sides of the square. Cutting the triceps bar can take some time since you are working through solid steel.
-
2
Cut off the excess metal that remains after cutting the triceps bar in half.
-
-
3
Take up the file and remove sharp edges, debris and rough spots from the cut areas.
-
4
Place the desired weights on the long horizontal handles. This particular design is suitable for four 2 1/2, 5 or 10 lb. barbell weights. You can subtract weights as you deem appropriate.
-
5
Secure the weights with the standard metal clamps.
-
6
Secure the weights with the secondary hose clamps. Make sure the clamps are very tight to ensure that the weights do not slide off.
-
7
Repeat the process with the remaining half of the triceps bar to create the second kettlebell.

Tips & Warnings
The heavier the weights are with this DIY kettlebell, the more resistance the clamps and bolts will endure. The device should always be carefully tested to ensure that the added weights are secure. If the sawed-off ends of the triceps bar are not completely filed, you run the risk of injury. When using the kettlebells, the area where they are being used should be free of breakables. When the kettlebells are in use, it is recommended that others are cleared from the area for added safety.
