Changing a belt on a vacuum cleaner is fairly easy. Following just a few easy steps will produce the desired results. The procedure uses very few tools and supplies. It is a good idea to change the belt on a vacuum cleaner every six months, depending on usage. This will prevent the belt from breaking during use, which can cause damage to the vacuum cleaner.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Owners manual
  • Correct size belt for the vacuum
  • Phillips head screw driver
  • Flat head screw driver
  • Newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Clean rag
  • Garbage bag
  1. Step 1

Check with the owner's manual to determine the correct size belt for your particular vacuum cleaner. There are no universal, one-size-fits-all belts, so be sure you have the correct size.

  2. Step 2

Place newspapers on the floor. Unplug the vacuum cleaner and tip it upside down on the newspaper. Look for the screws that attach the bottom plate to the body of the vacuum cleaner.

  3. Step 3

See what type of screws the vacuum cleaner has, Phillips head or flat head. Using the proper screw driver, turn the screw to the left to loosen and remove it. Remove the bottom plate. Wipe the area down with the rag to remove all dirt and dust.

  4. Step 4

Locate the belt, which will be attached to the beater brush on one side or in the middle. Slide out the beater brush and remove the belt. Remove any tangled strings and debris from the beater brush.

  5. Step 5

Slide the new belt onto the beater brush. Slide the other end onto the motor. Place a screw driver inside the belt by the motor to relieve tension on the bar where the belt attaches. Holding the screw driver in one hand, gently stretch the belt and slide the beater brush into place. When the beater brush is in place, remove the screwdriver.

  6. Step 6

Wipe off the base plate, line it up with the screw holes and replace the screws. Plug in the vacuum and make sure it operates correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change the vacuum bag, if there is one, at the same time the belt is changed. If the belt has broken, determine where the belt goes by examining the beater brush. There will be smooth metal area where the belt will go. On the motor there will be a bar that turns easily where the belt attaches. If in doubt, consult the owner's manual.
