How to Use Lighter Fluid to Clean Old Coins

Many people love to collect coins. The art of coin collecting is also know as numismatics. It can be a lot of fun hunting down a rare coin and extremely rewarding when you've completed a collection. Unfortunately, many of the sought-after coins can be extremely soiled due to years, and quite often decades, worth or circulation. And while collecting coins can be an expensive hobby, cleaning a coin with lighter fluid is cheap.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your coins with water and soap to loosen and remove as much dirt and debris as possible. Dry by hand or allow to air dry.

    • 2

Put on your gloves and saturate your cotton ball with lighter fluid. You should be able to purchase the lighter fluid from your local grocery store.

    • 3

Rub the cotton ball over your coin until clean.

    • 4

Rinse your coin with water and pat or air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your coin is severely soiled, fill a small container with lighter fluid and soak your coin for a few hours.

  • Using lighter fluid to clean a copper coin (such as a penny) may cause erosion on the face of the coin. You can tell a copper coin by the color. The color is usually a brown and gold mixture.
