You are carefully laying out a document in Microsoft Word. As you begin to number the steps you wish to define, Word suddenly takes over, adding numbers to your lines when you hit the enter key. You're left with indents or numbering changes that you don't want. Hitting the backspace key or undo icon is an instant reaction. Some people just grit their teeth and work around the inconvenience, but there is way to turn off the automatic numbering permanently.

Instructions

  1. Disabling Automatic Numbering

      Open Tools Menu

      Open MS Word and select "Tools" on the menu bar.

      Select AutoCorrect

      Select "AutoCorrect Options."

      Select AutoFormat Tab

      When the "AutoCorrect" dialog box opens, select the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab.

      Deselect the desired options

      Go to the heading "Apply as you Type" and deselect "Automatic Numbered Lists." If bulleted lists annoy you as well, deselect the "Automatic Bulleted Lists" option.

      Click "OK" to exit the dialog box and continue with your work.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to retain automatic formatting but just want to format a certain area, select the text that is auto-numbered and click the "Numbering" icon on the tool bar. It will remove auto numbering from the selected text.
