A stripped lug nut is the stuff of DIY repair nightmares. More often than not they are the result of impatient or over zealous work. Using the wrong tools to tighten lug nuts, like a pair of pliers or a socket wrench one size too large, will invariably strip the nut and make removing it a Herculean task. Although there are specific tools marketed for stripped lug nuts, removing one is a simple task if you know how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hammer
  • Socket wrench set
  • Spray lubricant (WD-40)
  1. Step 1

Clean the stripped lug nut as well as possible.

  2. Step 2

Spray the stripped nut with a generous dose of spray lubricant. Wait approximately 20 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Fit the stripped nut with the socket that fits perfectly. Then, remove it and use the socket one size smaller.

  4. Step 4

Place the smaller-sized socket on the stripped nut and begin hammering it over the stripped lug nut until it cannot be pried off with your bare hands.

  5. Step 5

Fit the wrench to the socket and loosen the nut by turning to the left.

Tips & Warnings
  • The hammering could take some time and a good amount of force. Be patient.
  • The socket could be damaged as a result of this technique.
