How to Cook Dry Butter Beans

Butter beans, or lima beans, are a popular vegetable side dish in the southern United States. An excellent source of fiber and protein, butter beans make a healthy and delicious addition to any meal.   • Large pot
  • Dried butter beans
  • Colander
  • Salt
  • Butter

Instructions

    • 1

      Soak dried butter beans in a large pot for at least 5 hours.

      Place soaked butter beans in colander and rinse with cold water.

    • 3

      Place butter beans in large pot and cover with water. Make sure there is enough water to cover all the beans so they cook evenly.

      Add a tablespoon of butter and teaspoon of salt to the pot of butter beans.

      Bring the butter beans to a boil. Boil the butter beans for 5 minutes.

      Reduce the heat and simmer for an hour. Add hot water if necessary to keep the butter beans covered.

      Remove the butter beans from heat and drain in the colander. Allow them to dry and cool completely before serving.
