Hanging pot racks allow you to hang pots over the cooking area, freeing up counter and cabinet space. Pot racks come in various sizes and styles and can be expensive. Building your own hanging rack saves you money and is a simple task. All that is needed to make a 1-foot-by-4-foot rectangular hanging pot rack are a few tools, lumber and hardware.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 4-foot-long smooth-finish pieces of 2-by-2 lumber
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw
  • Sander
  • Wood stain or paint
  • A box of 20 to 30 2 1/2-inch wood screws
  • 8 2-inch screws with hooks on one end
  • 10 1-inch screws with hooks on one end
  • Decorative chain
  • Pliers

    Cutting the Pieces

  1. Step 1

Cut two 9-inch pieces from a 2-by-2 for the ends of the rack using the circular saw.

  2. Step 2

Cut two 4-foot pieces from the 2-by-2 if you have pieces longer than 4 feet.

  3. Step 3

Cut three pieces of 2-by-2 2 feet long. These are the arms your pots hang from.

  4. Step 4

Cut two pieces of 2-by-2 1 foot 6 inches long for the other two arms.

  5. Step 5

Sand all rough edges off the cut pieces. Brush wood stain or paint on them and allow to dry.

  6. Assembling the Rack

  7. Step 1

Place the two 4-foot pieces parallel to each other 9 inches apart and insert the 9-inch pieces between them, forming a 1-foot-by-4-foot rectangular frame. Drive a 2 1/2-inch screw through both ends of the 4-foot sides into the shorter sides. The frame of the pot rack is now complete.

  8. Step 2

Line up a 2-foot piece over a 1-foot side of the frame and center it so about 4 inches extend past each side. Drive three 2 1/2-inch screws down through the 2-foot piece into the 1-foot side under it. Equally space the screws out.

  9. Step 3

Repeat Step 2 and attach another 2-foot piece on the other 1-foot side of the frame. Next, attach the remaining 2-foot piece over the center of the frame parallel to the other ones. Drive a 2 1/2-inch screw through the two spots where it touches the frame.

  10. Step 4

Lay a 1-foot 6-inch piece in a parallel position between each set of 2-foot pieces and center them. Also center them over the frame so about 3 inches extend past each sides. Drive a 2 1/2-inch screw through the two spots where they touch the frame. You now have five arms the pots hang from.

  11. Step 5

Screw a 1-inch hook into both ends of all five arms, making sure the open portion of the hooks face upward. One pot hangs from each hook.

  12. Step 6

Screw a 2-inch hook down through both sides of the 2-foot arms into the corners of the frame and prepare the rack for hanging. Screw the other four 2-inch hooks into the ceiling where you want to hang the rack. Ensure the hooks in the ceiling line up vertically over the rack hooks.

  13. Step 7

Cut four sections of chain of the length needed with pliers. Hang your rack.
