How to Paint Fiberglass Cars

Fiberglass cars are not as common as metal/steel cars; they're generally kit cars, race cars and custom-made car bodies used by automotive enthusiasts. Fiberglass is not as durable as metal and can crack and chip easily. Some fiberglass cars need to be repainted completely to repair damage and make the car look new again. Things You'll Need:

• Wax and grease remover
• Lint free cloth
• Sandpaper (120 and 1200 grit)
• Long sanding block
• Urethane or epoxy primer
• Automotive paint
• Automotive clear

1. Sand the surface of the fiberglass car with 120 grit sand paper on a long sanding block. This roughens the surface and prepares the car for primer. This step also allows you to see any dings, dents or warped areas of the fiberglass that need to be repaired.

2. Wipe the surface of the fiberglass car with wax and grease remover and a lint free cloth. Spray three coats of urethane or epoxy primer on the car. Use light, even coats of primer so it doesn't build up in one area or cause runs. Allow each coat to dry.

3. Use the 1200 grit sandpaper and long sanding block to sand the primered surface lightly. Sand just enough to remove the top layer of primer to make a smooth surface for the paint to be applied. Wipe the entire car down with wax and grease remover and a lint free cloth.

4. Paint the fiberglass car using four coats of paint. Use light, even strokes when spraying the paint so that no runs occur. Allow each coat of paint to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat.

5. Apply three coats of clear to the painted surface. The clear coat is to protect the paint from UV rays and light scratches.
