How to Make a Chef Hat for Kids

This is a fun activity to do with budding chefs. The process to make a chef's hat is simple, and you likely have everything you need in your home office. While they are usually left white, you can let children decorate these hats with crayons. If they are in a large group, decorating the hat is a good method of telling hats apart.

Things You'll Need

  • Per hat:
  • 3 sheets of legal-sized blank white paper (14 inches by 8 1/2 inches)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Crayons or markers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Tape two sheets of legal paper end to end. The result will be a long sheet eight and a half inches wide by about 26 to 27 inches long.

    • 2

Fold this long sheet into an accordion fold, all the way along the length. The pleats can be as wide or as narrow as you like, but one inch pleats work well. The children can do this part. Just make sure that they turn the paper over every time they make a fold so that V shapes are made.

    • 3

Cut the two two-inch wide strips off of the third sheet of legal paper, and tape these together, end to end.

    • 4

Fold the bottom third of the strip up along the whole length. You will have a two inch tall and 26 to 27 inch long strip of paper. This will be the cuff of the hat, and you should be able to see the fold on the outside. The crease is the bottom of the cuff.

    • 5

Gently unfold the accordion folded paper until it is stretched out enough to still see the pleats in it. Tape the bottom of this sheet to the top of the cuff, on the back side. The stretched out pleated paper will not extend all the way along the cuff. This is normal, and when you fit the hat on the child, the overlap will hide that.

    • 6

Let the child decorate the hat with the crayons or markers before fitting it to his head.

    • 7

Place the hat around the head of the child so that the cuff rests on her ears. Tape the ends of the hat together to stay in place, and your child's chef's hat is finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not let very young children use the scissors.
