How To Check RAM on Your PC

Random-Access Memory allows a computer to process the programs and services that are running at any given time. The more RAM a computer has, the faster a computer can perform this processing, and oppositely, the less RAM a computer has, the more the computer seems like a piece of junk. Knowing how much RAM a computer has allows you to understand the system's capabilities. Computers used as media centers generally have more RAM, while systems used for basic computing have less.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click on "Start."

    • 2

Right-click on "Computer" or "My Computer" and a drop-down menu will appear.

    • 3

      Click on "Properties."

    • 4

Find the line that says "Memory (RAM)" and it will contain the information you need. RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB) and depends on the the amount of memory on your memory card or module and how many memory cards or modules are installed in your computer. The line will read: "Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB" or "Memory (RAM): 128 MB," depending on the RAM that's installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also click on "Computer" or "My Computer," right-click on the hard drive, which is usually (C:), and click on "Properties" to check the amount of space your hard drive holds and the amount that has been used. This information appears on the "General" tab in an easy-to-read pie chart.
