1
Find a pair of pants to modify for your costume. Use brown, khaki or navy blue pants.
-
2
Get some scissors and cut slits in the bottom of the legs of the pants. Cut slits on the insides and outsides of the pants legs. If you prefer, you can cut slits only on the outsides.

3
After cutting the slits, poke a few holes through the pants next to the location of the slits. You can also poke holes around the entire bottom edges of the pants legs.
-
4
Take some thread and weave it through the holes. You can do an interlacing pattern over the slits only, or weave the thread around both legs of the pants.
-
5
For a finishing touch, get two strips of fabric that are a different color than your pants. Use a hot glue gun to attach these strips to the sides of the pants and you have yourself a pair of high quality pirate pants.

Tips & Warnings
Though not technically a component of real pirate pants, iron-on patches can add some flair. Use patches of skulls, swords, gold coins, parrots and ships.
Always be careful when working with sharp objects and hot glue.
