How to Turn Off the Disk Defragmenting Tool
The disk defragmenter is a tool that is, by default, set to run at a certain time on computers with the Vista operating system. (The tool also is on the XP operating system, but is not set by default to run at a certain time.) The process of defragmenting a disk moves parts of files around on the computer to keep your computer running at peak efficiency. However, when this process runs, it often puts a heavy load on your computer and can prevent you from completing other tasks. You can, however, adjust the schedule or turn off the disk defragmenting tool if you have administrator permission on your computer.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of turning the defragmenter off entirely, reschedule the defragmenter to run when you are not using your computer, to keep your computer running as efficiently as possible.
