How to Build School Spirit

Schools are responsible for providing children with quality educations, but successful school programs partner with members of the community in teaching students the value of being actively involved in the general community. A community that supports its schools helps students to develop a sense of pride in that community. Schools may use different kinds of activities to enhance school spirit and morale, but creativity is one of the best ways to get students to share their ideas and promote good will.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a school theme. Although the theme can change each year, aim for something that makes the students in your school special. The goal is to develop a sense of community among students, teachers and parents. The theme a school chooses should be one that provides opportunities throughout the school year for recognizing the achievements of both individuals and the school as a whole. Focus on developing a sense of unity by exciting everyone to action.

    • 2

Select school colors. Certain colors give off energy so that people respond with excitement. For instance, the color red tends to be associated with confidence and enthusiasm. In keeping with the school theme, choose colors that support the theme. Orange represents creativity, while yellow signifies wisdom. Violet embodies imagination, and aqua suggests high ideals.

    • 3

Choose a school mascot. A mascot program not only builds spirit within a school, but can also affect the attitudes of people in the community. Create a positive personality for your school's mascot.

    • 4

Plan fundraisers to promote school spirit. Well-planned fundraisers are an invitation for the community to support school programs, whether they are academic, musical, athletic or some other extracurricular activity. Pick fundraisers that somehow relate to the school theme.

    • 5

Designate one day each week as school spirit day to encourage camaraderie among students. Encourage teachers to participate as well. Appoint a committee of students and teachers to come up with creative themes to celebrate throughout the school year.
