How to Create an Excel Spreadsheet From an AS400 Spool File

If you work with a lot of AS400 files throughout the day, you may find it helpful to get your AS400 spool files into an Excel spreadsheet. Getting your AS400 spool files into an Excel spreadsheet will make it easy for you to manipulate reports and pull things like pivot tables and charts from the data in your AS400 spool files. Creating an Excel spreadsheet from an AS400 spool file is very easy if you have the right software.

      Get AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader on your computer. AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader is software that you can download onto a Windows-based computer (see "Additional Resources," below). There is a free 30-day trial of the software; after that, you will need to purchase it (2009 cost: starting at $495 for one license).

      Start AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader. When the program opens you will need to select the AS400 spool files that you want to turn into an Excel spreadsheet. Once you select the location where the files are, you should click "Open."

      Select your output. The AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader can turn your AS400 into many different file types, including PDFs and Excel files.. In order to create an Excel spreadsheet you will need to select "Microsoft Excel" from the drop-down menu by "Downloaded to:" toward the middle of the screen. You can select multiple AS400 spool files at once if you want. The files will be listed on the top half of the screen.

      Load the file to Excel. To get the AS400 spool file into Excel, you will need to click "Open" at the bottom of the screen after you have selected "Microsoft Excel." This will start the Excel spreadsheet creation process.

      Wait for the file to convert to Excel. The AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader will automatically detect which version of Excel is on your computer, and will load the AS400 spool file into an Excel spreadsheet of that version of Excel. The AS400 and iSeries Report Downloader will carry over any line or column breaks from the AS400 spool file to the Excel spreadsheet for you. Once the file is fully loaded into Excel, the new Excel spreadsheet will open up on your computer screen and then minimize itself to the taskbar. This is what lets you know that the process is complete.
