Although television antennas are available for purchase, a homemade television antenna makes a great DIY project for kids and adults, and, if properly built, may function better than a store bought antenna. Making your own antenna doesn't require a science degree or a lot of extra materials. You will find that most of the necessary parts can easily be found around your house, and the time commitment is minimal.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wrap a foot of copper wire around a magnet and tape the wire to the magnet with electrical or duct tape. Leave both ends of the wire protruding from the tape.

  2. Step 2

Glue a cardboard tube to the middle of a 1-foot by 1-foot piece of cardboard.

  3. Step 3

Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard base area beneath the cardboard tube. Cut another hole in the cardboard base, just outside the perimeter of the cardboard tube.

  4. Step 4

Push the copper wire through the hole in the cardboard base until it protrudes from the top of the cardboard tube. Tape the wire in place.

  5. Step 5

Push the other end of the wire in the cardboard base through the hole beside the cardboard tube.

  6. Step 6

Attach one end of the copper wire to the end of the copper wire that is sticking out of the cardboard base beside the tube. Tape the magnet down to the cardboard base.

  7. Step 7

Wrap a circle of cardboard (with a diameter of approximately 8 inches) in tinfoil. Tape the tinfoil to the cardboard circle.

  8. Step 8

With tape, attach the cardboard circle to the top of the cardboad tube, so that it is standing up vertically, or at an angle to the cardboard tube.

  9. Step 9

Wrap tinfoil around a 6-inch by 1-inch stick of cardboard. Tape the tinfoil to the stick, then bend one end so that 1 inch of the cardboard stick sits at a 90-degree angle.

  10. Step 10

Attach the cardboard stick to the bottom edge of the cardboard circle. Tape it there so that the stick is angled up and out, and the 1-inch bend is pointing upwards, resting above the center of the circle. Your antenna will now resemble a crude satellite dish.

  11. Step 11

Position the cardboard circle so that the tinfoil is touching the copper wire protruding from the top of the cardboard tube. Tape the cardboard circle to the wire.

  12. Step 12

Attach the unused end of copper wire that is attached to the magnet to the input wire for antennas on your television.
