How to Become a Limo Driver

If you love driving and want to work in a profession that allows you to earn a living doing it, then becoming a limo driver may be a career for you. You can make money driving people to special events like weddings, proms, anniversary celebrations and more. You may also be able to meet the rich, powerful and famous, such as corporate execs, sports stars, entertainers and the like. To become a professional limo driver, certain things should be taken into consideration.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that you have an impeccable driving record and excellent driving skills. Limo drivers need to know how to handle a vehicle well and how to drive defensively. They also have to be aware of driving rules, regulations and laws.

    • 2

Develop your map-reading skills. You will need to refer to a map often to determine the best routes to take or find unfamiliar areas.

    • 3

Fine tune your communications skills. As a limo driver, you will be dealing with a variety of people. While some clients may not want to say much to you, others may want to talk. Knowing when, how or whether to speak with them and how to behave professionally is important. The more comfortable clients feel with you, the more often they will request you as a driver and the more tips you can earn.

    • 4

Learn how to maintain your vehicle properly. Limo drivers are expected to inspect and upkeep their limos as part of their daily routine, which includes keeping it clean on the outside and exterior, making any necessary repairs, adding fluids and the like.

    • 5

Go down to the DMV in your area to get your chauffeur's license, if needed, which will require you to take and pass written and road tests, as well as an eye test. In some states, like California, you only need a Class "C" license to drive a limo if you only drive 10 or fewer passengers at one time. If you drive 10 or more people at a time, however, a Class "B" license may be needed. Requirements vary from state to state, so always check with the DMV first.

    • 6

Start off by applying to work for a limousine company in your area. You can find a listing of limousine companies in your local Yellow Pages or in newspaper classifieds. As a driver for a limo company, you can get on-the-job training, garner more experience and have the opportunity to receive steady assignments. Be aware, however, that these companies often perform background checks to find out information about your credit, educational background, medical issues and any felonies you may have been prosecuted for. If you know negative information will surface, mention it upfront.

    • 7

Get your own uniform. Most limo companies do not provide drivers with one. Find out what the company you work for requires you to wear, which may include a dark suit, tie, cap and gloves. Once you get these items, make sure that they are always kept clean, neat and presentable.

    • 8

Consider becoming a private limousine driver. Once you have more experience and have built up a solid reputation, you can then work independent of a limousine company and drive for individual clients. This means you can set your own rates and make more money. It also means, though, that you will be responsible for all expenses and costs, have more liability and have to buy your own limousine.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must be at least 21 years old to become a limo driver for most limousine companies. Most companies prefer that you have at least a high school diploma or GED.
