How to Make Greenhouse Dirt

When growing plants in a greenhouse, it is important to use lightweight soil that retains moisture without becoming water logged. Although you can buy potting mixtures at nurseries, you can easily make your own greenhouse dirt. The advantage of mixing your own soil is that you can alter the ratio to meet the needs of your plants. You can also easily increase your soil's water-retaining properties if your seedlings are drying out too quickly.

Things You'll Need

• Peat moss
• Vermiculite
• Perlite
• Container

Instructions

1. Purchase peat moss, vermiculite and perlite at your local home improvement center or hardware store.

2. Mix two parts peat moss with one part vermiculite and one part perlite in a large container. Wear a dust mask when pouring the peat moss.

3. Mix all ingredients thoroughly and spray the mix with water. The soil mixture should be damp, but not be soggy.

4. Fill seed trays or flats with the greenhouse dirt. Keep seeds evenly moist until they germinate. Once seedlings are established, water whenever the soil begins to dry. Mist daily to maintain humidity levels.
