Celebrating your child's birthday is not only fun, but seeing the anticipation on their face as they await their cake is a wonderful feeling. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Making the Cake

    • 1

Follow the instructions to making your cake. Pour the mix into your 8-inch round pans and cook according to the directions on your box. Let your cakes cool on a cake rack. Once they have cooled, gently run a butter knife around the edges of the cake. This will help loosen them so that you can turn them upside down onto a plate easily. Once you have done this, set your cakes aside.

    • 2

In advance, bake a dozen cupcakes. When making the ears, carefully remove the cupcakes from your pan. You may not get the ears perfect the first couple of times; that's why you make a dozen. Cut the cupcake in half to make your ears and set aside.

    • 3

Once you have your cake and cupcakes made, it's time to assemble and decorate your cake.

    Designing the Cake

    • 4

Using your cake pattern as a guide, begin by mixing some vanilla and chocolate frosting. You don't need a fancy icing decorator. You can cut corners by placing some icing in a medium Ziploc bag, and cutting a small corner off. Spread the icing according to the shape of Curious George's face.

    • 5

Take your darker chocolate icing and make the outside outline of Curious George. Then take the remaining frosting to coat the outside lining of the cake.

    • 6

To decorate his face requires a steady hand. If you're not comfortable drawing the inside of the monkey's eyes, once again you can cut corners and use brown M&M's for his pupils.

    • 7

Draw his eyebrows, eyes, nose and smile with the black icing. Once you're satisfied with his face, it's time to attach his ears.

    Placing the Ears

    • 8

After the initial cake is completed, it's time to assemble Curious George's ears. Take one half of a cupcake, and just like with the cake, take a bit of frosting, and spread on one side of the cupcake. Attach the ear to one side of his head. Do the same for the other side.

    • 9

Decorate the ears with the lighter frosting on the inside, and darker frosting on the outside. Make the edges clean by taking a knife and smoothing the icing. Now your Curious George Cake is complete.

    • 10

If you like, just for fun, you can spread some banana shaped candy (like Runts) on the outside of the cake.

Tips & Warnings

  • There's nothing more stressful than trying to create a cake the day before your child's birthday when you're not prepared, so it might be easier to practice making a cake a week before your child's birthday. Practice drawing the outline of the monkey. Also practice using icing if you're not used to drawing with it.
