The alto saxophone, or sax, is one of the most popular instruments in school concert, jazz and swing bands, and is also sometimes used in orchestral works and as a solo instrument. Famous alto sax players include Mindi Abair, David Sanborn, Charlie Parker and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Alto Sax
  • Reed
  • Neck strap
  1. Step 1

Assemble your sax, put on your neck strap, and attach the sax to the neck strap. Sit on the front edge of an armless chair and adjust the neck strap so that you can reach the mouthpiece easily without craning your neck.

  2. Step 2

Put your left hand on the top keys of the sax and your right hand at the bottom. Place your right thumb under the hook on the back of the sax to keep it stable. Press the back key (the only one on the back of the instrument) with your left thumb. Press the top white key with your left index finger.

Blow steadily into the mouthpiece without letting your teeth touch the reed. The note that sounds will be the B just below middle C. Consult fingering charts for other notes.
