How to Paint a Shower Pan

Older shower pans can start to look worn out with age. Scuffing, discoloration and staining can make your shower look dirty, dingy and generally not like a place you'd want to clean yourself. When this time comes, you might consider replacing your shower pan, which can be a disruptive, time-consuming task. Luckily, there is another option. You can restore your shower pan by adding a simple coat of paint.

To achieve a professional-looking painted finish, though, you will need to take your time with prep work, follow the correct steps and choose the right materials for the job. You must also take adequate safety precautions, including wearing the right protective gear.

When painting a shower tray, it's important to use the correct safety gear. You'll need to wear a pair of gloves, a respirator and eye protection, in addition to suitable clothing, including closed-toe shoes and a long-sleeved shirt.

If you're going to be kneeling to paint your shower tray, protective kneepads may also be necessary. It's important as well that you keep your bathroom well ventilated by opening a window or using your exhaust fan during the priming and painting process.

Before painting, lay down a drop cloth to protect your bathroom floor and cover your drain cover and the edges of your shower pan with painter's tape. Place a plastic bag over your showerhead to prevent any moisture from dripping onto your shower tray.

Thoroughly clean your shower tray before you begin to paint. Any dirt, oils or soap left behind will interfere with the adherence of your paint. Use an abrasive cleaner containing bleach to thoroughly clean the entire surface; rinse well and repeat as necessary.

Next, use a caulk tool to remove the caulking around the edges of your shower tray. Scrape down the interior of your tray using a scouring pad and rinse well. If necessary, fill in any gouges or nicks in the surface using a tub and shower repair kit. Then use the sandpaper from your refinishing kit to remove the gloss from the surface of your shower pan. Making sure the surface is slightly rough will help your primer and paint adhere to the surface. This will help ensure the best longevity for your new color.

Be sure to wear a dust mask when sanding to protect your lungs from any airborne particles. After sanding, remove any dust from your shower pan by wiping it thoroughly. Afterward, allow it adequate time to dry, as any traces of moisture can have an adverse effect on your paint job. You can use a blow-dryer to speed up the process.

Apply the liquid primer from your refinishing kit using a paper towel. Next, mix your Part A (color) with Part B (hardener) well and leave to settle for five minutes.

Pour the paint mixture into the paint tray provided in your kit, using the roller to spread the first coat across the entire area. Use the foam brush to get into harder-to-reach areas. Make sure there's always plenty of paint on your roller or brush. A second coat can be applied straight afterward following the same instructions.

Once you're happy with the evenness and opacity, wait for 45 minutes, remove the masking tape and allow your shower tray to dry for 24 hours before applying fresh silicone caulk. Rinse the surface of the shower tray with warm water prior to use.
