Whether you want to reveal a surprise or just create a distinct invitation for your party, guests will enjoy receiving scratch-off invitations. You can instruct your guests to use a coin to scratch off the location for a surprise party, the date and time for a birthday party, or instructions on what to wear to a costume party. It's also easy to tie in a theme, such as creating a scratch-off balloon for a birthday party, a Christmas tree for a holiday party, or a palm tree for a luau. Scratch-off invitations are also surprisingly easy and affordable to make.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Card stock paper
  • Clear shelf paper
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint
  • Small paint brush
  1. Step 1

Print the invitations on card stock. You can make flat, post-card style invitations, or folded invitations on which only a portion are scratch-off.

  2. Step 2

Cut the invitations apart, or fold them, depending on the type of invitation you are creating.

  3. Step 3

Laminate the invitation with clear shelf or contact paper. You can either laminate the entire invitation, or only the portion that you intend to turn into a scratch-off. If you only laminate a portion of the invitation, make sure the clear laminate is slightly larger than the area you intend to cover as a scratch-off.

  4. Step 4

Cut a stencil out of a piece of the clear shelf paper. Leave the backing on until you are done cutting out the stencil. The stencil can be any shape you choose, such as a heart, circle, star or rectangle. If you are turning the entire invitation into a scratch-off card, you do not need a stencil.

  5. Step 5

Peel the backing off the stencil.

  6. Step 6

Place the stencil carefully on the laminated portion of the invitation where you want to create the scratch-off.

  7. Step 7

Paint the area within the stencil with acrylic paint.

  8. Step 8

Wait for the paint to dry and then apply a second layer of paint. Repeat until the words or pattern on the invitation is no longer visible through the paint.

  9. Step 9

    Peel away the stencil.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change out the stencil if the edges begin to fray. If the edges don't seal well, paint will seep under them and you won't get a nice clean line.
  • Don't place the stencil on any area that isn't covered by the clear plastic laminate or it will peel away the paper when you remove it.
