Hold the end of the incense stick that is not coated. The non-coated side is shorter than the coated part and is also thinner.

Hold the flame under the tip of the coated end to light it. Once the stick is on fire, remove your lighter.

The flame on your incense stick should go out by itself after a few seconds. If it does not, gently blow the flame out. It should not remain on fire.

Immediately after lighting, secure the incense stick into the hole of your incense holder so that it will catch any ashes that fall.

Within a few seconds of lighting, the incense stick will begin to glow a deep red color. Shortly after, the scent will release into the air. The scent will continue to release until the stick is completely finished burning. The smoke will allow you to visibly observe this process.
