Things You'll Need:
- Hair clippers
- Antibacterial cleanser
- Razor
- Shaving cream
- Aftershave toner or lotion
- Witch hazel
- Hydrocortisone cream
-
Step 1
Trim any hair you have on your head. If you are shaving your head for the first time, the hair should be less than 1/4-inch long. If it is longer, you won't get a close shave and the process will undoubtedly cause razor bumps.
-
Step 2
Wash your head with an antibacterial cleanser prior to shaving. Bacteria often leads to razor bumps. Since shaving opens your pores, bacteria can easily slip into them and cause irritation. Prevent this issue by thoroughly cleansing your head beforehand.
-
Step 3
Use a sharp, clean razor to shave your head. Dull razor blades often lead to razor bumps as they drag across the skin's surface rather than clean cutting the hair. Replace your razor blade every two to three shaves for best results. If there is any rust on the razor, it's time to throw it out.
-
Step 4
Apply shaving cream or gel to your head. You must always use a lubricant every time you shave your head. If you don't, the razor blade will snag on the skin's surface, leading to cuts and razor bumps. With proper lubrication, the razor should easily glide over the skin's surface.
-
Step 5
Try aftershave lotions or toners. These products often contain alcohol, which kills bacteria. It also helps to tighten pores after they have been opened by the shaving process. You can also use witch hazel for a more holistic aftershave.
-
Step 6
Spread hydrocortisone cream over your head after shaving. This skin-soothing cream calms irritated skin. If applied regularly, you'll be less likely to experience razor bumps.
