How to Build a Resume with No Experience

It is possible, though challenging, to write a resume with no experience. After all, you can't get experience if you can't get a job. The key to building a resume with no experience is to focus on your skills and education. The resume format will be different from a work history resume. Remember to tailor your resume to the specific job for which you are applying.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of all the skills you have to offer a potential employer. Skills that employers seek include good communication, organization, the ability to research, writing and computer knowledge.

    • 2

Make each skill into a heading. Under each skill heading, list specific instances when you used the skill. For example, if your skill is communication, you could write about the time you delivered a speech to a group of people. It does not have to be a time when you used these skills on the job.

    • 3

Open a new document. Type your name and contact information at the top. Hit "Enter" at least twice and type your objective just as you would for any other resume format.

    • 4

Create a subheading called "Education." List your educational experience in this section. If you do not have a degree in a related field, but have taken related courses, list these individually.

    • 5

Create a subheading called "Skills." List each skill from your list as a new subheading. List each example of a time when you used these skills under each skill subheading.

    • 6

If you have any work experience, create another subheading for "Work Experience." Even if your work experience is unrelated to the position for which you are applying, you should still include it. This shows the potential employer that you have experience in the working world.

    • 7

Create a subheading called "Activities." List any clubs, organizations or volunteer programs with which you have been involved.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not need to list references on your resume.

  • Do not write too much. An ideal resume is one page. Do not make it any more than two pages.
