How to Sign over a Car Title to Multiple Owners in Texas

If you have a car in Texas that you are selling to multiple owners or are giving to multiple owners, like a family, then you will need to actually sign over that car title and have it transferred to those multiple owners. Signing over a car title to multiple owners is not a difficult process, and the state of Texas makes it very user friendly by allowing you to get everything that you need from the internet so that you can show up at your local county tax office with everything already filled out.

Take an odometer reading. In order to transfer a car title in Texas, you will need to have a look at the odometer in the car and write down the total number of miles listed on the odometer onto the title transfer application.

Get a copy of your registration. If you cannot find your registration for the car, you will need to get a copy of it before you can sign over the car title to multiple owners. You can get a copy of your Texas registration by visiting your local county tax office. If you do not know where that office is, just look for the location nearest you on the Texas Department of Transportation's website (see Resources).

Fill out an application for Texas Certificate of Title. You will need to get application #130-U to do a title transfer to sign over your car to multiple owners. The top part of the application is for information on the vehicle, such as make and model. You will put the odometer reading number here, as well as the VIN number, which you will get from your registration. Below that is where the new owners' information goes. List all of the new owners' names in this section. The last section is for the previous owner's information, which is where you put your information. All of the parties will need to sign the bottom of the form.

Pay the title fee to complete the transfer to the new owners. To complete the title transfer, the new owners will need to pay the title fee, which will be either $33 or $28. The fee varies by county. A county-by-county fee breakdown can be found on the Texas Department of Transportation website (see Resources).
