Fit and design: These are the common problems encountered when shopping for a custom fitted bed skirt. This is especially true as it seems that beds always differ in size from store-bought bed skirts. With that, sewing your own tailored bed skirt makes a welcome alternative. Bed skirt refers to the fringed or pleated fabric that runs the length of the base of your bed. They are so easy to make.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine your bed's yardage. Measure your bed frame's length, width and height from the top of the box springs to the floor. Remove your bed's mattress. Measure the length and width of the bed frame; add about 1 inch allowance to the seams. Along with the measurements of the box springs, determine the measurements of the drop of the skirt that you are making. Measure the perimeter of your bed; this will determine the skirt's length. This will guide you in knowing how much fabric you need as well as its width and pattern repeats.

  2. Step 2

Lay your fabric out on your work table, draw the necessary markings to precisely fit the fabric into your measurements. Cut out the fabric precisely through those markings. Press the raw edges; make a hem on the edges of the fabric.

  3. Step 3

If you are making a gathered bed skirt, run the basting stitch through the length of your fabric, then gather. Unless the fabric that you use has been railroaded, you can join the edges of the gathered skirt with a French seam.

  4. Step 4

If you are making a pleated bed skirt, fold the fabric into pleats and run the basting stitch to secure the pleats. Press the fabric to set the crease. Join the edges together with a French seam.

  5. Step 5

Finish the top edge by making a 3-inch strip that will serve as the top band. To do this, make use of the length of the skirt you made to lay out a 3-inch thick rectangle. As you cut through the fabric, observe a 1/2-inch allowance. Make a hem through the edges, leaving one seam open. Turn and make a double stitch on the edges. Sew the band on the top edges of the bed skirt.

  6. Step 6

Attach the finished product on the gutter of your bed using bed skirt pins. Arrange the pleats or gather of the skirt. Remove excess threads.

Tips & Warnings
  • When choosing the fabric, consider the factors like how full you would want your bed skirt to be or how heavy the material is. Railroaded fabrics do not need seams. Binding and fringing with a contrasting color of fabric gives your bed a decorative finish. You can also do layering on the bed skirt. Just put one fabric on top of the other and follow the same steps.
