New employees are bound to have impact on an organization. Whether the impact is positive, in that it benefits the company, or negative, in that the employee is a drain on the company, will be founded in the way the employee is trained. Instructions

Set aside a period of time to focus on training the employees. Depending on the type of job, this may require meeting every day for a week to a couple of months. You will want a room with either desks or a large table and chairs, training manuals for each employee and a dry erase board and marker. If you plan to train using PowerPoint presentations then you will need a computer and screen as well. Use the time with the employees to review job guidelines and responsibilities and provide an overview of the company. Meeting together will also provide an excellent time for teaching, testing employee knowledge and role playing.

Enlist other company employees to assist with implementing the new employee training as well. Have different department heads do a session on their specialty area. You could have the customer service manager train employees on providing proper customer service. Have the IT manager give insight into dealing with technical issues. Have someone from the ethics department discuss the importance of adhering to guidelines. Doing this will not only take the burden off of one person having to do all the training, it will give the new employees valuable knowledge into all aspects of the job.

    • 3

Have the new employees shadow reputable company employees. Schedule each of the new employees to shadow different people in different roles for a couple of days. This will give the new employees hands-on experience and help them apply what they have learned. Meet with the employees that provided the shadow training to find out how the trainees are doing. This will give you great insight into who is working out and who may need some extra attention.

Assign reputable employees as job coaches to help the new employees be successful. Providing mentors for the new employees should help increase their success. They will have someone to talk to and ask questions of if they are having a problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be approachable so that the new hires will be more likely to communicate with you if they are having a problem or need assistance. You may want to compensate the coaches with some extra money to give them an incentive to take the role seriously.
