Remove all clutter and anything fussy. The Japanese style of decorating is extremely simple. Walls are kept mostly bare, with maybe one piece of artwork hanging in the middle, if any.

Stick with the colors brown, gray and tan, with accents of gold. These four colors are predominant in Japanese homes. One exception can be to include black lacquered furniture, preferably with gold accents.

Add a shoji (rice paper) screen to the room. These are freestanding screens and are often used as room dividers, or to liven up a corner of the room.

Put pillows on the floor. It is traditional to sit on the floor in Japan. For that reason, also keep your furniture low to the floor, such as a large coffee table surrounded by pillows.

Include some carefully chosen decorative accessories such as Bonsai plants, bamboo blinds and grass mats. Add a tabletop fountain for serenity.

The thought of (less is more) is very appealing. I think I like this style(Japanese) for furnishing a home. However, The use of tarditional colors is not as appealing. Brown, grey, and tan, I feel can be modified and still achieve a feeling of "Zen".
