Make Beeswax Lipstick

As the name suggests, beeswax is a natural substance derived from bee hives and is used to make all types of products. Beeswax has been used for years in the production of lip balm, chapstick and lipstick. It has natural properties that give the wearer a soft and shiny pout, and it also can heal chapped or dry lips. In combination with a few other ingredients, beeswax can be used to make lipstick in your kitchen without any fancy equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Beeswax
  • Shea butter
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Avocado oil

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 3 oz. beeswax, 1 1/2 oz. olive oil, 2 1/2 oz. avocado oil and 3 1/2 oz. shea butter in a heatproof Pyrex cup. Place the cup in a hot water bath until the beeswax and shea butter have melted completely. Stir to blend the ingredients together.

    • 2

Add about 20 drops of any essential oil to the mixture. Essential oils are derived from herbs, fruits and flowers, and they are used in beauty products to give them a scent and flavor. Some popular choices for lipstick are vanilla, lavender, sweet orange and lemon. Stir to blend.

    • 3

Add 1 1/2 oz. mineral pigment to the melted mixture. Monave Cosmetics (see Resources below) has a great selection of iron oxide pigments that contain no synthetics and are safe to use as lip color. You can choose any pigment or even mix a few different pigments to come up with your custom color.

    • 4

Place an electric blender on low and gently beat the final mixture until the pigment and waxes have blended thoroughly and the color is uniform. Transfer the melted beeswax lipstick mixture into lipstick jars and tubes to harden and cool before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can buy unblended mica pigments from a makeup wholesaler. The avocado oil and extra-virgin olive oil can be bought from any whole foods store. Experiment with different mica and iron oxide pigments and various essential oils to create beeswax lipsticks in different shades and flavors.

  • Use extreme caution and wear oven mitts when handling the heated Pyrex cup and melted beeswax mixture.
