How to Become an Online Transcriber

Transcriptionists are required to listen to audio recordings and provide a transcript of the information, even if the audio is muffled, recorded in a crowded room, or nearly inaudible. A transcriber must then organize the words into reports and other documents.

Instructions

    • 1

Check out all of the different transcription fields that are available (general, legal, and medical) and decide which one is right for you.

    • 2

Obtain a degree or certificate in general, medical, or legal transcription. Many community colleges provide courses that offer hands-on experience. Depending on the type of transcription you are interested in, some companies may require you to take a three-year training course upon hiring.

    • 3

Become precise in your spelling, punctuation, and grammar. If you want to land a career as a legal or medical transcriptionist, become familiar with industry terminology within that field.
Transcriptionists are required to be fast and accurate when it comes to listening, typing, spelling, and grammar. Increasing your typing skills is a major plus.

    • 4

Create an online resume. Resumizer is a free online resume creator (see "Resources" below). Be sure that it lists all of your qualifications, work history, experience, and degrees that are relevant to the transcription field in which you are applying.

    • 5

Post your resume on an employment website like Monster or Yahoo! HotJobs. When adding a title to your resume for employers to see, be sure to list the job title you wish to obtain.

    • 6

Find online companies that are hiring for the online position you wish to obtain. A good place to start finding transcription jobs is 2Work-At-Home (see "Resources" below). Read the privacy policy, terms, and your rights and responsibilities so that you know what you're walking into before you apply.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take typing tests online to increase your typing speed and accuracy. Some will allow you to print out a free typing speed certificate that you can use when applying for jobs. Purchase transcriptionist software to practice transcribing before you apply. Use the name of the software as experience in your resume. Practice listening to others. When you are on the phone, try typing (as quickly and as accurately as possible) what your friend is saying. As a transcriptionist, you will be required to listen to audio recordings and type everything that is said.

  • Never pay for a job. The company should be paying you for your services, not the other way around.
