How to Get Rid of Registry Cleaner Adware in XP

Registry cleaner adware can create pop-up ads informing you that you need to scan your computer. These ads can be frequent and annoying. Registry cleaner adware can get on your computer when you click an advertisement or if you visit a "bad" Web page. Fortunately, registry cleaner adware isn't anything that is too difficult to remove from any computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Update Windows XP. Many times, downloading a Service Pack or security update can erase registry cleaner adware from your computer. To do this, go to the Microsoft Update Web page (see Resources below). If your version of XP requires an update (or updates), a list of updates will appear on the screen. Download any updates that are recommended by Microsoft. Restart your computer after these updates have been downloaded to finish the installation process.

Run an anti-adware program. Registry cleaner adware infections will be detected by any good anti-adware/anti-spyware program. Once you scan your computer using one of these programs, you'll be able to delete the registry cleaner adware from your computer. If you haven't already downloaded or bought an anti-adware program, download Spybot: Search and Destroy by clicking the link in the Resources section below.

Scan your computer with an anti-virus program. The registry cleaner pop-ups appearing on your computer may be caused by an infection that is a virus rather than adware. In this case, a standard anti-adware program may not detect the infection. AVG Anti-Virus (see Resources below) is an anti-virus program that will detect and delete registry cleaner (and similar) infections.
