How to Repair the Gel Coat on a Boat

The gel coat on a boat is a complex covering that dries to a hard shell. It is different from paint in that it can crack and requires a different type of repair than a typical chip or scratch in paint. Gel-coat repair kits make the job simple and include everything you need to complete the job. They are sold at boating and marine stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the damaged area using a clean cloth and some soapy water to remove all of the grease and dirt. Towel dry. Do not sand the area.

    • 2

In a small mixing cup, add enough gel agent to cover the damaged area. Just squeeze it right out of the tube and into the cup.

    • 3

Slowly add colors from your color tubes until you accurately match the color of your boat. For an off-white, just add a small bit of yellow, or leave the gel as is.

    • 4

Add the hardener to the gel. This comes in a smaller tube inside the kit. Since some hardeners may be stronger than others, read the instructions carefully to find out how much to add. Usually, the amount is given as a ratio.

    • 5

Mix the hardener into the gel vigorously until all the red disappears.

    • 6

Scoop the gel onto your mixing stick or another plastic applicator, and spread it over the damaged area. Don't be too fussy about it; just get enough on to cover the area.

    • 7

Apply the plastic film sheet included in the kit to the gel, and gently smooth the sheet with your hand. This will help to even out the gel, and it also protects the gel as it hardens. Apply tape around the film to hold it in place.

To improve the repair or make it perfectly flush, sand the area with light-grit sandpaper, and repaint the surface. For most repair jobs, the gel coat will be sufficient.
