    Learning to Drive a Moped

  1. Step 1

Contact your insurance company. As this is a necessary step when you purchase the moped, you can gain a bit of information about learning to drive your moped. Insurance companies keep lists of approved or preferred courses that the insured driver can take. These classes include basic driving courses, and typically, once you complete a course, the insurance company will offer you a discount.

  2. Step 2

Check through your local phone book. Many driver's education schools offer classes on the basics of driving a variety of vehicles. Contact some, and see if they offer courses for moped driving. If the schools do not offer courses on mopeds, ask for a recommendation for a school that does.

  3. Step 3

Find materials at your local library. Many libraries contain informational videos or DVDs available for checkout. Locate videos and book sources on learning to drive a moped.

  4. Step 4

Find an experienced moped driver. Ask around to family and friends, or consider posting an ad requesting moped driving lessons. Learning firsthand from a fellow moped driver will give you not only the basics, but also that driver's experiences with mopeds. Use that experience to your advantage, and ask all the questions you may not be able to ask in a more structured teaching environment.

  5. Step 5

Practice driving your moped in a large, open parking lot or other surface that is clear of vehicles and obstacles. Set up mini driving courses, or just practice the basics of driving, turning and stopping your moped. Familiarize yourself with the functions of the moped in this environment so that you are more comfortable when you begin to drive on the roads.
