Step 1
Complete a program of study in office management. Completing a course of study will give you the tools you will need to succeed as a school secretary: organizing and prioritizing, computer programs, phone systems and office equipment. As part of your education, you also must develop your written, verbal and math skills.

Get Certified Pulmonary Resuscitation certification. This will be a valued asset to any school and one that will give you an edge when you are competing for a position.

Volunteer at a summer camp. This will give you exposure to a working environment filled with children, where you will play many roles. It will show any school that you have experience and have what it takes to be its secretary.

Participate in internships and externships during your studies. You will be able to practice everything you have learned under the guidance of your professors. This will be a great way to gain experience, contacts and even a permanent position.

Become the room mother at your child's school. This is also a way to get your foot in the door. The school will see that you are committed to helping, and that you enjoy working with the students and are agreeable to their system of doing things. You will be in contact with the staff, and when an opening becomes available, they will think of you to become part of their team.

In this age where children are not protected enough, you must portray the image of someone with strong values that will be a role model for the students. Also, as a school secretary, you will be the first line of contact for parents, visitors, guests, students and teachers.
