Visit the USPS website (see Resources below) and click on "Calculate Postage."

Select "Calculate Domestic Postage" or "Calculate International Postage," depending on the final destination.

Select the type of package you will be mailing, including postcard, letter, large envelope or package. Weigh your letter or package on a scale and enter the weight in the spaces provided.

Enter your zip code and the zip code of your destination. If you don't know the zip codes, click on the "Zip Code Lookup" link and a new window will appear where you can find the zip code by entering the rest of the address.

Enter the date you will be mailing your letter or package and click "Continue."

Review the postage prices and shipping times on the next page. The USPS tool displays postage for various mailing speeds, including First Class, Priority Mail and Express Mail, and tells you how long it will take for your mail to reach its destination.

Visit your local post office to use the automated postal center. According to the USPS, these units are available in the lobby of each post office and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Place your letter or package on the scale and enter the zip code of the destination city using the digits displayed on the touch-screen monitor.

Review the postage prices displayed on the screen. The automated postal center will display the price of postage for different mailing services, including Express Mail, Priority Mail and First Class.

Select the appropriate mailing service if you wish to continue and mail your package. Enter cash or swipe your credit card. The service center will print out your receipt and a shipping label.

Affix the shipping label to your letter or package and place it in the slot on the automated postal center.
