How to Design Car License Plates
Car license plates allow you to express your personality and let the world know how you feel about things without ever having to say a word. You can design your own car license plate to make sure it expresses just exactly how you feel about things. Once you have designed your car license plate, there are a number of ways to have it made to your specifications including ordering it online or commissioning a personal vanity plate.

1
Draw the outline of your license plate. Use your ruler to measure the space for the vanity plate on your car. These are usually standard, but mark where any bolts will be so that you can factor this into your design.

2
Pick a theme. If you try to express your opinion on everything using your car license plate, it will probably be too confusing for anyone to understand what you are trying to say. Picking a theme will help you get your message across. If you love to have fun, then a party theme might be good. If you have strong patriotic feelings, then a patriotic theme could do the trick. Write down what kind of theme you want outside the license plate outline.

3
Decide what you want written on the license plate. You may opt for nothing, but most people like to have their names, their initials or a favorite saying on their custom license plate. This should go along with your theme. For example, if you picked a patriotic theme, then you might write "Freedom is not Free." Write it in the outline where you want it to appear.

4
Find images for your license plate. These do not have to be exactly what you want transposed to the plate, but they should give you a good idea of what your ultimate visual will look like. You can place them in the outline or just keep them nearby and write where they will be in the outline.

5
Commission your license plate. Once you have finished the design process, it is time to get your personally designed license plate made. You can find a variety of websites such as CustomLicensePlates.com that will take your designs and make them into vanity plates. If you prefer, order the design from a license plate shop (these are often souvenir shops as well) or an auto specialty shop.

Tips & Warnings
If you are designing a license plate for a teen driver, do not use his name. Strangers can use the license plate to get his name, then use his name to get the teen to drop his guard, leaving him susceptible to harm.
