How to Create a File or Folder

Creating a file or a folder is a basic computer skill that is essential to a computer user who wants to be productive with his system. A user has the ability to create a spreadsheet file to do a monthly budget or a notebook file to type out a grocery list and folders can be created to organize the files. There are a few different methods for creating files and folders, but each is a simple procedure that only takes a few seconds to perform.

Instructions

  1. Creating a File

    • 1

Navigate to the place on your computer where you want to create a file and right-click on an empty space in the system folder. A drop-down menu will appear on which you'll click on "New."

    • 2

Another menu will appear with a list of programs you can create. If the type of program you want to create is on the list, click on it and it will appear in the system folder.

    • 3

Name the file and press "Enter" to finish creating it.

    • 4

If the type of file you want to create doesn't appear on the "New" menu, open the program with which you want to create a file.

    • 5

In the program, click on "File," and then click on "Save As" and move on to Step 3. You can save the file before or after you've added information. If you do it before you add information, just open the file again with the "Open" command in the program and add the information. Be sure to save it again when you're finished.

    • 6

Once you've clicked on "Save As," name the file.

    • 7

Designate a location for the file. If you want to put the file on your desktop, navigate to the desktop in the "Save As" box. If the desired location is in another area, navigate to that place. Click on "Save" to save the file in the designated location on your computer. Be sure to save the file in a place where you can easily remember it. You don't want your files to get lost on your computer, though you can always perform a system search to find it.

    Creating a Folder

    • 8

Open a system folder in the place where you want to create the new file or folder. To do this, you can click on "Computer" or "My Computer" on the desktop or on the Start Menu, click on the hard drive (this is normally the (C:) drive), and from there, the choice is yours where you want to go for file and folder creation.

    • 9

Once you've arrived at the location where you want to create the folder, right-click on an empty space and a drop-down menu will appear on which you'll click on "New."

    • 10

Another menu will appear on which you can click on "Folder."

    • 11

A new folder will appear inside the system folder.

    • 12

Name the folder and press "Enter" to finish its creation.
