Most backpacking stoves have similar designs: pressurized fuel is vaporized and sent to the burner, where it is ignited. Learning to operate your stove is as easy as learning to control each of these functions. While these operations will be slightly different on each stove, the basics will remain very similar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stove
  • Fuel bottle or canister
  • White gas for a liquid-fueled stove
  1. Step 1

Uncap or unscrew the fuel bottle. For a liquid-fuel stove, attach the fuel pump to the bottle and pressurize according to manufacturer instructions (between 20 and 25 pumps for must stoves). A butane or butane blend fuel canister should screw directly to the base of the stove.

  2. Step 2

Attach the stove's fuel line to the fuel pump. Lubricate the nozzle with saliva or a special lubricator, and insert it into the pump's fuel output using a slow twisting motion. Most stoves feature a lever that should be flipped to lock the fuel line into the pump.

  3. Step 3

Prime a liquid-fueled stove by releasing a small amount of fuel into the priming cup at the bottom of the stove. Shut off the flow, then light the fuel in the cup. Allow this to burn down, then turn on the fuel flow before the flame goes out. The jet burner should ignite. This process heats up the fuel line enough to vaporize the fuel.
A canister-powered stove can be ignited without priming. Simply turn on the fuel line and light.

  4. Step 4

After cooking, allow the stove to cool completely before disassembling it. Release the remaining pressure in the fuel bottle by slowly unscrewing the pump. Replace the bottle's cap.

Tips & Warnings
  • Butane canister stoves need no priming or pressurizing. This type of stove may be lighted after the fuel canister has been attached to the stove in Step 1.
  • Do not relight a stove until it has fully cooled. This will require you to re-prime a liquid-fueled stove before ignition.
