A jammed zipper on an existing purse is disabling, but it doesn't mean you have to discontinue the use of your purse. A zipper can be replaced and, rather than take it to a professional, you can put a new zipper in your purse.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Zipper
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine with zipper foot
  • Thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine needle
  • Seam ripper
  1. Step 1

Use the seam ripper to carefully pull out the seams holding the existing zipper to your purse. Throw out any excess threads in the seam ripped area before continuing.

  2. Step 2

Measure the length of the area where you are placing your zipper using the tape measure, and purchase a zipper of that length. Make sure to choose a sturdy zipper that matches your purse's color and style. Aim for something similar to the old zipper, if possible, as purse fabric is generally heavier than regular clothing fabric.

  3. Step 3

Tuck one side of the zipper tape (the fabric on the outside of the metal zipper teeth) between the lining and the outer fabric with the teeth pointing outward. Pin all three of the layers together for the length of the zipper.

  4. Step 4

Put the zipper foot on your sewing machine, and change the sewing machine needle to something sturdier. If you are sewing leather, make sure to choose a leather sewing machine needle. Since every machine is different, check your sewing machine's manual for more information on setting up your sewing machine.

  5. Step 5

Place the section of the purse where you have pinned in your sewing machine, and sew down the left side of the zipper, as close to the zipper's edge as possible. Make sure to back stitch at both ends.

  6. Step 6

Tuck the left side of the zipper tape between the outer fabric of the purse and its lining. Pin it down, just as you did with the right side of the zipper tape.

  7. Step 7

Open your zipper, and with the zipper foot as close to the teeth as possible, sew down the other side of your zipper. Clip any excess threads.
