How to Fold Mural Screens

Most mural screens fold closed like an accordion. While no special techniques are necessary for folding most screens--just adjust the hinges so that the accordion shape of the screen helps it stand upright--if you're going to fold a mural screen for storage it merits special attention. Make sure the screen is clean and dry before you fold it for storage. The primary concern is to protect the painted or embellished surface of the screen panels. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Trim sheets of linen or plastic to the same size as the mural panels.

    • 2

Swing two side-by-side panels of the screen toward each other. It's best to start from one end of the screen and work all the way across it.

    • 3

Check to see whether the two panels are swinging together back-to-back or painted sides together.

    • 4

Insert one of the thin linen pads or thin sheets of plastic you cut to size between the panels if they're coming together painted-sides first. This isn't necessary if they're coming together back-to-back.

    • 5

Fold the next mural panel in toward the already-folded panels. Again, if two painted panels come together, you need to insert a thin pad between them. If the backsides of the panels come together, no pad is necessary.

    • 6

Continue folding the mural screen together, one panel at a time, until it's completely shut like an accordion.

    • 7

Protect the outer surface and trim on the mural screen by wrapping it in a large sheet of plastic and taping this shut or slipping it into a large plastic bag. If the screen panels are especially long you might slip each end into its own plastic bag, which should then be taped together where they overlap.
