How to Make a Handbag Pattern
One aspect of being a crafter that is fun is being able to share your art and talents with others. When you decide to put that talent on paper to send away or sell, however, suddenly that skill becomes a little cumbersome. A handbag pattern, as with any pattern, needs to be as clear as possible in describing a complex process. Start by recreating the handbag yourself. Make as many notes as possible about what you are doing, the measurements of your pieces, and how they go together. With good notes, either written by hand or typed on the computer, putting the rest of the pattern together can be a breeze.

1
Write out the quantities of fabric needed for the project. In order to follow the pattern, readers will need to know how much fabric to buy.
-
2
List the measurements of the individual pieces. Typically a handbag will have at least a front, back, corresponding lining, and pieces for a strap or handle. If there are other items, such as a bag bottom, or pockets, list them as well.

3
Trace out the main outline of the pattern onto legal paper. Standard size paper is suitable if your pieces aren't too big for it. Write the measurements on the pattern pieces.
-
4
Trace a quarter of an inch outline around your main template to create the seam allowance. Quarter-inch guides for drawing are available, so you can use one of these if you are unsure of your hand when you're drawing the seam allowance.
-
5
Label the pattern pieces by numbers (1, 2, 3) or by letter (A, B, C) to make the directions easier to write and follow. Mark the fabric grain with arrows if necessary to help align the pattern with the fabric during the cutting phase.
-
6
Make photocopies of your pattern, if desired. This can give you a master record to copy from if your pattern wears out. Cut out the pattern pieces and then remove any excess paper scraps.
-
7
Following your notes, write out a step by step description of how to construct the handbag. List the order of making the bag from the very first steps of tracing the pattern out on the fabric to putting in the last stitch. If needed, and if you have the artistic ability, draw out diagrams and pictures to help readers understand how your pattern goes together.

Tips & Warnings
If this is a pattern you will be using over and over, consider tracing the pattern onto template plastic for a sturdier pattern that can withstand abuse and multiple tracings.
Be as specific as possible when writing your directions without becoming too wordy or confusing. Different people learn in different ways; some people will need to just start sewing, while others will understand how to make the bag just by reading the directions.
